Caesarean section flap: why does this “bag” of skin persist?

articleUseronJune 17, 2026

What is a “cesarean section fold”?
After a cesarean section, many women notice a slight bulge, crease, or depression in the lower abdomen, just above the scar. This is commonly referred to as a “cesarean crease” or “cesarean shelf.” This is a very common phenomenon that can occur regardless of a woman’s age, weight, or physical activity level.

Why does it occur?
During a cesarean section, the doctor cuts through several layers of tissue, including skin, fat, and fascia. As the body heals, it creates new scar tissue. This process can cause:

uneven skin and tissue tension,

scar tissue growing into deeper layers,

changes in the natural shape of the lower abdomen,

accumulation of fat tissue around the scar.

As a result, a characteristic fold or bulge may appear above the scar.

Is it dangerous?

In most cases, it does not pose a health risk. This is primarily an aesthetic concern. However, in some women, it can cause:

a feeling of pulling or tightness in the skin,
discomfort when bending or exercising,
skin irritation in the area of the fold,
loss of self-confidence and dissatisfaction with the appearance of the body.

If severe pain, redness, swelling, or discharge from the scar occurs, consult a doctor.

What increases the risk of developing a fold?

The most common factors include:

excessive weight gain during pregnancy,
being overweight or obese before pregnancy,
poor abdominal muscle tone,
a genetic predisposition to scarring,
and the way the wound heals after surgery.
